Hundreds of protesters gathered at Union Buildings on Saturday to raise awareness of farm killings and call on the government to take strong action against the perpetrators.

Motorcyclists, motorists, the farming community and hundreds of Pretoria residents embarked on a slow journey from N1 North and Sefako Makgatho Drive to Union Buildings to draw attention that “enough is enough” with murders on farms.

One of the organizers, Kallie Roux, said that they gathered at the offices of the state bureaucracy to pray for the murders on farms and also to ask the police ministry to prioritize murders on farms.

“We plead with the government to take action against farm killings,” he said.

“These are not normal killings if you look at the nature of the killings, they can be quite brutal and we need the police to make sure the perpetrators are accounted for.”

Second, to this lawsuit, Roux said the protesters were also asking the presidency to say something about the agricultural killings. “This is our way of speaking out against the attacks on farms and a way of condemning these killings.

“We believe that it is important to have protests like this to show agricultural communities that we stand in solidarity with them in their pain and their fight against the scourge of agricultural slaughter.”

Sandra Joubert, who was also part of the organizing team, said the protest was aimed at calling on South Africans to unite against farm killings.

“This is not about color, but about farm killings and everyone must defend our farmers.

“We are also calling on the police department to oppose farm killings because they are also part of the land.”

This comes after a week that saw several protests against attacks on farms in some parts of the country.

On Friday, protesters gathered in Bronkhorstspruit magistrates court demanding that the court deny bail to a 28-year-old man accused of being involved in an attack on a farm that occurred in the area two weeks ago.

The case was postponed until Thursday, October 15 to request bail.
