This week marks the start of the 16 Days of Activism Against Women and Child Abuse campaign.

The campaign begins on Wednesday on the International Day of Non-Violence against Women and culminates on the International Day of Human Rights on December 10.

The campaign follows the sentencing of Pinetown serial rapist Tumelo Khiba.

Pinetown Magistrate Queen Khuzwayo this month sentenced Khiba to six life sentences and 35 years on 16 counts of rape.

Khiba, 25, used the same modus operandi from 2016 to 2017 when he was arrested.

“He lured his victims out of the Pinetown financial district by promising them odd jobs. He targeted women between the ages of 17 and 23,” said police spokesman Col. Thembeka Mbele.

The Department of Social Development has asked all victims of gender-based violence to contact social workers in an attempt to help with their cases.

Spokesperson Mhlaba Memela said the department had programs in place to help victims of gender-based violence.

“With growing concern about an increase in gender-based violence, it is gratifying to see that SAPS investigations can secure convictions. We want the police to continue investigating and secure more convictions. Women must be vigilant at all times as criminals continue to prosecute. take advantage of them. “

At the time of the trial, the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Sihle Ntuli, told the court that in October 2016, Khiba raped a 17-year-old girl who was at the time a high school student.

“She was on Hill Street in Pinetown when the defendant allegedly approached her using Sihle’s name and befriended the teenager, who later told her he was on his way to Internal Affairs, but did not know where he was. He had to bring him money. to his mother who worked nearby, “Ntuli told the court.

To compound the sentence, state attorney Simphiwe Dube advocated for the harsher sentence, adding that had Khiba not been caught and arrested, he would have continued.

In May, one of her victims told the Daily News that she still feared being alone in Pinetown.

She had just finished writing her 12th grade final exam when he raped her.

“He held my neck with his arm and forced me to take off my leggings … He raped me without a condom,” she said at the time.

Khiba’s latest attack, on January 17, 2017, led to him being arrested at a taxi rank in Pinetown CBD when he stole his victim’s shoes.

When the woman reported the rape case to the local police station, the police drove her through the central business district in the hope that she would find out.

He pointed out to Khiba that he was apparently wearing his shoes.
