The Brazilians have equaled the record set by Amakhosi at PSL for the number of titles won so far
Mamelodi Sundowns is the Nedbank Cup champion for the second time under coach Pitso Mosimane.
The Brazilians beat Bloemfontein Celtic 1-0 to lift the trophy, their third this season to further demonstrate their dominance in national soccer.
In doing so, Sundowns broke the record previously held by Kaizer Chiefs.
As of Saturday, Amakhosi were the kings of the South African soccer cup with 20 major trophies to their name in the PSL era.
But now they share that record with the Sundowns who won their 20th major trophy at the expense of Phunya Sele Sele.
Of the 20 trophies that Sundowns has won since 1996, a whopping 11 was won with Mosimane as their head coach, this includes five league titles won between 2014 and 2020.
The first major trophy to be won by the Tshwane giants in the PSL era was the 1997/98 league title with the late Ted Dumitru at the helm.
They went on to lift the league title nine times later with various coaches.
The Sundowns boast a single MTN8 trophy won in 2007 while it was still called SAA Supa8 – they beat Ajax Cape Town in the final with Brent Carelse finding the back of the net.
They are also three-time Telkom Knockout Cup champions and their first appearance was in 1999, when it was still sponsored by Rothmans. They would then add two more TKO titles in 2015 and 2019.
Sundowns’ Nedbank Cup win this weekend saw them engrave their name on the trophy for the fourth time overall, once during 1998 as Super Bowl Bob Save and three times with current sponsors.
To add the icing to the top, the Brazilians also conquered Africa four years ago, winning the Caf Champions League and Caf Super Cup in 2016 and 2017 respectively.
On the other hand, the Chiefs last lifted a major trophy in 2015, when Stuart Baxter was still in charge of the first team.
Amakhosi has four league titles, four National Cup titles (Nedbank Cup), eight League Cup titles, three Top 8 titles (MTN8) and a single African Cup Winners’ Cup title.
