Finance Minister Tito Mboweni has responded with surprise and anger to reports about Controversial prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary fled the country last week while on bail.
The couple did not show up to a police station on Friday, based on the conditions of their bail, and in a statement on Saturday confirmed that they had left the country. They claimed that they had fled to preserve their lives after locals the authorities did not act on several alleged death threats they had received.
They made several demands on the government before returning to SA.
Mboweni, like many others on social media, was shocked by claims that the leak could have something to do with the arrival of the president of Malawi. Lazarus Chakwera, who flew to South Africa on Thursday for a short meeting with President Cyril Ramaphosa on Friday.
A senior government official told the Sunday Times that the possibility of Chakwera’s involvement could not be ruled out, considering his close relationship with Bushiri.
Chakwera spokesman Brian Banda and acting spokesman for the SA presidency, Tyrone Seale, denied the claims.
