the Proteas women have achieved an impressive six-field victory against India in the second T20 to seal the series 2-0 at Ekana Cricket Stadium on Sunday, with a T20 game to spare.
The result gives the Proteas an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series before Tuesday’s T20 final in Lucknow.
In the process, the Proteas made history by claiming their first ever T20 series victory in India.
After winning the toss and choosing to play first, fast pitcher Shabnim Ismail attacked early and sent India captain Smriti Mandhana for 7.
Shafali Verma (47 of 31 balls) made a crucial 79-run play in the second wicket with Harleen Deol (31), before Verma fell to Nonkululeko Mlaba (1/27).
Richa Ghosh scored 44 unbeaten on 26 balls to bring the home team to 158/6 in her 20 overs.
Responding to the total of tourists, the Proteas lost the early wicket of Anneke Bosch (2), the winner of the SA match from the first T20, but they were on their way by hitting 70 of 45 balls (11 fours and six).
Indian pacemaker Radha Yadav claimed Lee’s wicket with the Proteas still needing 42 for the win.
However, it was star hitter Laura Wolvaardt who led the Proteas over the goal line with an undefeated 53-of-39 (7 fours).
South Africa needed nine of six balls, which soon became seven of three.
But Wolvaardt had other plans, helped by an inopportune no-ball, as the Proteas won the game with the last ball of the game.
The third Q20 on Tuesday is scheduled to start at 3:30 PM SA.
Scores in brief:
India 158/4 in 20 overs (Shafali Verma 47, Richa Ghosh 44 *, Anneke Bosch 1/26)
South Africa 159/4 in 20 overs (Lizelle Lee 70, Laura Wolvaardt 53 *, Rajeshwari Gayakwad 1/20)
Result: South Africa wins by six wickets
