  • TelkomOne, the new service in partnership with SABC, will cost R49 per month for premium access.
  • That’s half the price of Netflix’s cheapest SA package, and it’s in line with Showmax’s cheapest option.
  • But Telkom is bundling streaming data with that.
  • Here’s what you can expect from the new SABC and Telkom streaming site.

Telkom and SABC unveiled a new streaming service on Monday that appears to appeal to those looking for local TV shows, movies and music, at half the price of Netflix.

TelkomOne is specifically aimed at competing with companies like Netflix and Amazon Prime, while SABC explores its own streaming platform options. The SABC recently lamented the severe financial losses resulting from the popularity of these global broadcasting services in South Africa, and sparked ire by hinting at plans to make them jointly responsible for TV license payments.

The new platform, which has promised to focus on local content, has a free viewing option (focused on SABC stations) and a premium package called AMP.

In TelkomeOne’s “free zone”, you can tune in to more than 20 SABC radio stations, access some of the station’s archives, and access SABC 1 and 2 TV stations.

AMP paid packages bundle Telkom data for streaming with access to video for streaming. They come in four flavors:

  • R7 per day, with 90MB of data
  • R17 for the weekend, with 360 MB of data
  • R19 for the week, with 720 MB of data
  • R49 for the month, with 1,800 MB of data

All AMP options offer an extended channel list and include upgrade functionality, and there is a video-on-demand option in the app. AMP users can record their favorite shows through a NextPVR (NPVR) interface.

Even ignoring the streaming data packed with TelkomOne AMP, the service costs half the price of Netflix in South Africa, where prices start at R99 per month and go up to R169 per month, for access that includes all of the high-profile originals from Netflix. sample.

Showmax makes a closer comparison, with a mobile plan at 49 per month. Although limited to one device, the Showmax option includes access to a much larger selection of international content.

In October Telkom launched a search for “mobivelas” – soap operas for mobile phones, with a melodramatic story and a permanent cast – for TelkomOne.

You also want comedy videos, as well as lifestyle shows, which could cover cooking, travel, exercise, or educational entertainment.

“The deciding factor will be the content producer’s ability to deliver a good escapism to viewers looking for inspiration and entertainment,” said Telkom.
