Motorists will get a mix of fuel prices in December, with gasoline prices falling and diesel prices rising next week.
The Department of Energy has released the official fuel price changes that will occur on Wednesday (December 2), which will reflect the following changes:
- Gasoline 95: decrease of 13 cents per liter;
- Gasoline 93: decrease of 13 cents per liter;
- Diesel 0.05%: increase of 20 cents per liter;
- Diesel 0.005%: increase of 20 cents per liter;
- Illuminating paraffin: increase of 29 cents per liter.
The movement of prices is affected by two main factors: international oil costs and the movement of the rand / dollar exchange rate.
International average prices of gasoline products decreased, while diesel and light paraffin increased during the period under review. Meanwhile, the rand appreciated against the US dollar over the period under review, on average, compared to the prior period.
The average rand / US dollar exchange rate for the period from October 30, 2020 to November 26, 2020 was 15.6305 compared to 16.4657 during the previous period.
This caused a lower contribution to the Basic Fuel Prices of gasoline, diesel and light paraffin in 25.86 c / l, 26.12 c / l and 25.14 c / l respectively.
However, a third factor will come into play in December, with the department increasing the annual margin on fuel prices.
In line with the application of the Regulatory Accounts System, the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy has approved a net increase of 14.3 c / l in the annual margin adjustments in gasoline and a net increase of 7.86 c / l in Diesel and luminous paraffin wholesale prices, effective December 2, 2020.
Because of this, a decrease in the price of gasoline that would have been around 27 cents per liter is now much smaller, while the increase of 12 cents per liter for diesel is now greater.
This is how the changes will be reflected in the pumps:
Fuel (inside) | November Official | December Official |
---|---|---|
95 Gasoline | R14.59 | R14.46 |
93 Gasoline | R14.39 | R14.26 |
0.05% Diesel (wholesale) | R12.25 | R12.45 |
0.005% Diesel (Wholesale) | R12.27 | R12.47 |
Illuminating paraffin | R6.55 | R6.84 |
