CAPE TOWN – A Cape Town principal will face disciplinary action Monday after the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) charged him with 10 offenses.
Heathfield High School Principal Wesley Neumann will be at a preview hearing this afternoon.
Of the 10 charges, one relates to an accusation that he attempted to assault a student and the other charges relate to his failure to get teachers and students to return to school in August, according to the provincial education department directive.
Brandon De Kock, Heathfield High School governing body: “These charges relate primarily to COVID-19, but there is also one that is completely ridiculous. According to them, he threatened to assault a student by pointing his finger at him. We have sent them Las Video footage and statements and staff corroborated Mr. Neumann’s story where he did not assault a student. “
De Kock said that when COVID-19 infections were increasing in the province, Neumann urged parents to keep their children at home until after the coronavirus spike.
“We have three support staff to clean the school. Two were out with comorbidities. According to the WCED protocol, the school is supposed to be disinfected three times a day. How can one person do that? They promised they would investigate and support us. with additional staff, but nothing happened. “
The school’s governing body and parents will picket this afternoon to show their dissatisfaction with the way the principal is being treated.
“I think it’s personal attacks, political attacks, and it smells like victimization. Mr. Neumann was just trying to protect staff, community, and students. We’re not going to take this on its back. WCED is facing a massive fight.”
