JOHANNESBURG – Health Minister Dr. Zweli Mkhize and his wife, Dr. May Mkhize, tested positive for COVID-19.
The minister said they were in quarantine at home and was optimistic that they would make a full recovery.
Mkhize was tested on Saturday after showing mild symptoms and confirmed in a statement Sunday night that the couple had contracted the virus.
“We decided to do the test yesterday [Saturday] when I started showing mild symptoms. I felt abnormally exhausted, and as the day progressed, I began to lose my appetite. My wife had a cough, she was dizzy and extremely exhausted. Given his symptoms, the doctors advised him to go in for observation and rehydration, ”Mkhize said.

He said his close contacts in the last week were some of his family members and some members of his team from the Department of Health.
“We inform and advise them to isolate themselves immediately at home and get tested,” Mkhize said.
“I am now self-quarantined at home and both my wife and I remain optimistic that we will make a full recovery from this virus.”
The minister said he would use this quarantine period to rest and recharge “because our task of improving the health services of our country and the lives of our people even after COVID-19 remains of the utmost importance.”
