CAPE TOWN – Western Cape Health MEC Nomafrench Mbombo said Wednesday that it was dismayed by Finance Minister Tito Mboweni’s claim that Tygerberg Hospital was racially segregated.
Mboweni made the comment during his medium-term budget policy statement.
During the height of the COVID-19 outbreak in the country, the hospital was designated as a key health center.
“This Tygerberg (hospital) still has a black and white section. There’s a section where blacks used to go and whites used to go; structurally it is still there. So the thing needs to be removed. Is incredible. I thought there was a DA government. “
This is the comment that made Mbomo boil as Mboweni spoke about supporting new hospitals.
Mbombo said the minister’s claim was an outright lie, adding that he should apologize.
She said Tygerberg Hospital and the staff who work there serve the entire community and the province.
MEC spokesperson Nomawethu Sbukwana said: “The fake news has one goal in mind: to detract from the ugly truth that the national government is going to invest another R10.5 billion in the rescue of SAA.”
Prime Minister Alan Winde was also angry and said that the national government has chosen to lie and play politics.
