The Brazilian owner has apologized for the incident and hinted at a possible dismissal of the officials involved.
Mamelodi Sundowns President Patrice Motsepe described the inclusion of suspended defender Tebogo Langerman in the Nedbank Cup final team card as “negligent and reckless behavior”, while vowing to initiate disciplinary proceedings against those involved in the saga.
Langerman was suspended for the match and was about to be introduced as a substitute, prompting the losing finalists to Bloemfontein Celtic to complain to PSL in a matter that threatened to strip the Brazilians of their Nedbank title.
However, the Celtic case was dismissed on a technicality that they filed their complaint late against the National Football League manual which states that a protest must be filed 30 minutes before kickoff.
Motsepe personally took responsibility for the incident and offered an apology.
“I would like to apologize to all the fans and members of the Mamelodi Sundowns family, as well as the organizations that are involved in soccer and all the people who love and follow soccer in South Africa and the rest of the African continent for Tebogo. Langerman was included as a substitute during the recent Nedbank Cup final against PSL and Safa rules, ”Motsepe said in a statement.
“As the president of Mamelodi Sundowns, I am responsible for everything that happens at Mamelodi Sundowns; whether he knew or did not know or was not aware or involved in the matter. “
The Sundowns president identified that team management and technical staff made a mistake by including Langerman on the team of the day.
Severe penalties have been promised to the culprit, with the possibility of dismissal.
“Our preliminary investigation indicates that management and the technical team were grossly negligent and this behavior and conduct is totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” Motsepe said.
“A formal disciplinary hearing will be held as soon as possible and appropriate actions, including termination, will be implemented when the circumstances legally justify it.
“We are a caring, caring and forgiving organization, but we also have a duty to protect the reputation, integrity and good name of Mamelodi Sundowns. We have to make sure that this kind of negligent and reckless behavior doesn’t happen again. “
