CAPE TOWN – Heads must roll over the death of Cape Town’s top anti-gang commander, Charl Kinnear.

Police Minister Bheki Cele says an investigation must determine why protection was removed from the chief police officer.

Kinnear was shot in his vehicle in front of his home Friday afternoon.

Kinnear spent three decades in law enforcement service, and the 52-year-old was well known in the city for investigating its seedy underworld of organized crime.

His eldest son was the last to speak to him, just minutes before he was killed by a still unknown assailant, believed to have been waiting for him.

Carlisle Kinnear left the house to find his father slumped behind the wheel, shot multiple times.

“I’m not angry at the police but there are questions, why were the guards removed? It’s too late, my dad ran his race. I salute him, I’m proud of him,” he said.

His wife, Nicolette, has spoken publicly in the past about living in fear when police protection was removed from the family home.

“We were always worried. The fact that my husband is no longer with us, I think they must want to reach out to us to reach him, but of course, he does not share his research with their families, ”she said.

Police Minister Bheki Cele acknowledges that Kinnear’s death is a plague on the service.

Cele promises answers on who could be behind Kinnear’s death in 72 hours.
