Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini’s glucose levels are being monitored at the hospital.

  • Rumors that Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini had died are false, confirmed Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi.
  • The monarch was admitted to the hospital on Sunday and is currently in the ICU.
  • Buthelezi added that the king was “completely mobile” and “not fragile in any way.”

Rumors of the death of Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini have been described as “cruel” and “irresponsible” by former IFP leader Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi.

In a statement issued Thursday, Buthelezi addressed rumors circulating on social media that the king had died.

Zwelithini was admitted to a hospital on Sunday and was reported to be in ICU receiving treatment after his glucose levels became unstable over the weekend.

Buthelezi said:

I wish to allay the nation’s concerns regarding these fables. His Majesty was admitted to the hospital to treat high glucose levels. He was not, and still is not, fragile in any way. Even this morning, he is fully mobile and continues treatment for unstable glucose. His doctors preferred to be treated in the ICU so that they could care for him thoroughly.

The veteran politician, in his role as traditional prime minister to the Zulu monarch, said the rumors had caused “tremendous pain in the royal family.”

“You wonder what kind of people would start such cruel and false rumors that His Majesty has passed away, when he is certainly alive. Unfortunately, such irresponsible behavior has been seen before … spread like wildfire.

“One can only hope that those who report the news on official channels have the discernment to deal with such serious matters on the basis of the facts,” he said.
