CAPE TOWN – The Hawks raided the Johannesburg offices of LTE Consulting on Tuesday as part of an investigation into the purchase of personal protective equipment.

“The Hawks conducted a search and seizure operation in Gauteng of LTE Consulting offices in connection with an ongoing investigation into the PPE acquisition,” said Hawks spokeswoman in the province, Colonel Katlego Mogale.

The South African Police Service awarded the company a R77m contract earlier this year to supply three million face masks to police to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

The company is owned by Thulani Majola, a donor to the ANC party, and has won a large number of government contracts in the last decade.

LTE was also involved in the failed R2.2 billion project to supply drinking water to 55 villages in Giyani in Limpopo province.

It recently appeared in news reports saying that the Zondo commission investigating the state’s capture was investigating payments to an account linked to Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema, including a sum of R200,000 from LTE Consulting.

The raid on the Sunninghill facility is apparently unrelated to an informed decision by the Zondo commission to investigate the financial statements of Malema and his deputy Floyd Shivambu.

Last month, law enforcement agencies told Parliament that they are investigating contracts worth two-thirds of the roughly R15 billion that state entities spent on acquiring material in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. .
