Three home affairs officials, including one who demanded a 10,000 rand bribe from an undocumented foreigner in Jane Furse, Limpopo, were arrested on Tuesday.

The trio, ages 30-42, were arrested during a sting operation by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation Unit and Home Affairs Anti-Corruption Team for alleged corruption, the spokesman for the Hawks said. Hawks, Captain Matimba Maluleke.

Instead of arresting him, the officials allegedly demanded a 10,000 rand bonus for his freedom. The amount was reportedly reduced to R4,000 and the victim paid it to the suspects, ”Maluleke said.

The matter was reported to the Hawks, who promptly carried out an investigation that resulted in the arrests.

They were expected to appear in Motetema magistrates court on Wednesday.
