Western Province have suffered a hard blow with the news that the defender Warrick gelant The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the knee has apparently been torn.
Gelant suffered the injury in WP’s 22-20 loss to the Bulls in their opening Currie Cup game at Newlands over the weekend.
More details about the injury outside the union are expected on Tuesday, but it is understood to be serious and likely to be a hammer blow for the player, as ACL injuries typically mean up to nine months on the sidelines.
So Gelant will be in a race against time to be fit for the Springboks home series against the British & Irish Lions next year.
The first test, on July 24, is less than eight months away and Gelant would have a hard time getting fit on time.
The 25-year-old was a standout player for the Stormers at the recent Super Rugby Unlocked tournament and would have been a strong candidate for the No. 15 Springbok jersey.
He was a member of the South African team that won the World Cup in Japan last year and has nine test matches.
