Imagine you are spending a nice day in a wildlife park and you are looking at the parrots on display when the birds start to insult you.
That was the experience of several visitors to the Lincolnshire Wildlife Park in England, who were told where to get off while admiring the new African Grays on display.
The park is described as a “zoo with more than 100 species of parrots” and draws visitors to its quirky jungle-like displays.
The National Parrot Sanctuary in the park is the largest of its kind in the country and recently hosted five African Grays. They were kept together in a room before adding them to a display, but they seemed to have learned bad words as they boarded together.
At first it was fun, but the mood changed when they started insulting the visitors.
The park’s executive director, Steve Nichols, told CNN that he had been called “chubby” every time he passed their exhibit.
“Literally, in a very short period of time, they start insulting others. ‘F ** k off is the most common. It’s very easy for them to learn.”
He said the decision was made to transfer several parrots to isolation.
Nichols told the BBC that the swearing sparked a backlash that encouraged the parrots to swear more.
“With all five, one would swear and another would laugh and that would continue. Some visitors found it fun, but when the kids visited us on the weekends, we decided to move them.
“I hope they learn different words within the colonies. If they teach others bad words and I end up with 250 cursing birds, I don’t know what we’ll do, ”he said.
The Guardian UK reported that the parrots have since been sent to different areas of the sanctuary so that they do not “shoot each other”.
