Cape Town – The Gugulethu Development Forum believes the murder of eight people in a house shooting was drug-related.
However, police did not respond to questions last night about whether they were aware of complaints from the community about drug-related activities at the home or whether they had found illegal substances there.
Sikelela Zokufa, spokesperson for the Gugulethu Development Forum, said: “The incident has taught us that as people we need to be careful about the places we visit.
” The shooting has to do with drugs because the house is well known in the area for selling drugs, and has been for a long time.
“As an organization, we have been addressing the issue of drugs, but the problem is that people were afraid to speak up. The area is very notorious and crime is spiraling out of control.
” We have a responsibility to stop crime in the area by working with SAPS and members of the community and other organizations. We need a dialogue session where we will discuss things like crime in our community and other issues ”.
As a team of organized crime detectives supported by criminal intelligence officers worked hard, an eighth person died in the hospital after Monday’s mass shooting.
Two gunmen stopped in NY78 and fired multiple shots, killing three women and four men.
“Following a shooting Monday afternoon in Gugulethu, where seven people were killed and two injured, Cape Town police have just been alerted to the death in hospital of one of the two survivors.
“It brings the death toll from the shooting to eight. The ages of the deceased persons range between 30 and 50 years. Although some of the victims have been identified, the names of some have not yet been determined, ”said police spokesman Brigadier Novela Potelwa.
Friends Lumka Hlotywa and Lindelwa Mafuya were among the seven people shot to death at Hlotywa’s home while having a drink.
Mafuya’s niece, Sibongile Mafuya, said: “I can’t believe she’s gone, this is like a dream to me. My aunt has been friends with Lumka for a long time and that’s what they always did on the weekends.
” This is so inhumane. Whatever they did, they didn’t deserve to die like this. I am concerned about his 34-year-old son, he loved his mother very much.
An intelligence-led investigation was needed, said Parliament’s police portfolio committee chair Tina Joemat-Pettersson.
“The committee will engage SAPS senior management at the provincial and national levels to obtain information on how they plan to fight this scourge.”
