The forward was in line for his return to Manchester United, but was lost due to a bout of illness.

Pep Guardiola has described Sergio Agüero as “the best striker in Manchester City’s history” and says the team is losing its main attacking threat.

Aguero has been plagued by injuries since soccer returned after the shutdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.

He did not play last season after injuring himself in a 5-0 win over Burnley on June 22, and has only made five appearances this season.

The Argentine international was in contention to make his initial comeback from injury against Manchester United on Saturday, but was struck by an upset stomach and did not travel to Old Trafford.

In his absence, City lacked offensive drive on the night. Gabriel Jesus led the line, supported by Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne, but the Brazilian international is not a striker in the same mold as Agüero.

Guardioa has admitted that his team has missed the former Atlético de Madrid player.

“We miss Sergio, but during the last six months, not just today, he was injured many times,” Guardiola said after the 0-0 draw. “One step at a time, he’s not in shape yet.

“Other players are working hard. He had a stomach problem today and couldn’t do a session. He was at home.

“Of course we miss Sergio, he is the best striker in the history of Manchester City.

“In the next short time, we will go without him and I am sure that when he is in shape, he will return.”

The draw did little for City’s title challenge, but Guardiola says he was happy to secure a point at Old Trafford.

“It’s a good point,” said the City manager. “I would like to win but it’s okay, it’s Old Trafford that we can’t forget. They are so fast up front. It’s Manchester United.

“In most parts of the game, we were good. We lacked chances to score but we were good.

“I’m very proud. This team will kill you. They are so fast, so good, so strong from set pieces.

“Coming here to Old Trafford, this is pretty good. I know the expectation for Manchester City is very high and we accept it, but being solid is good ”.
