Police spokesman Colonel Priscilla Naidu said a robbery case was being investigated and an investigation file had been opened in relation to the woman’s death.

“His name is withheld until a formal identification is made,” Naidu said.

The two women, who were 21 and 24, are alleged to have boarded a taxi on Cape Road on Wednesday, he said.

“They were the only two passengers. At some point during their journey, they realized that the driver had taken a different route. Joined the M4 motorway from Mount Road. When he was questioned, the women had their personal belongings stolen: bags, money, cell phones, etc.

“The 21-year-old jumped into the back seat of the taxi. It is further alleged that in his traumatic state, he opened the rear window and jumped out of the moving taxi. “

Naidu said he died on impact.

The discovery of his body on the road caused an accident.

Naidu explained: “The woman’s body lay on the M4, Port Elizabeth exit. A [motorist in a] Bakkie, who was traveling in that direction, noticed the body on the road and braked, causing a heavy truck to hit him from behind. The truck had sunk. No one was injured in this incident. “

The other passenger was unharmed.
