JOHANNESBUG – The Gauteng Health Department pleaded with family contacts of those enrolled who tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday to go quarantine as well.
More than 900 students contracted the virus in a single year-end party.
The department says it made progress in its contract-tracking efforts to find students who may have contracted the virus while attending a recent Rage party in Kwa-Zulu Natal, which was marked as a super spread event.
The festival took place from November 27 to December 4 in Ballito, and several other editions of the annual party have since been canceled or postponed.
It is understood that more than 1,300 students from Johannesburg and Tshwane attended and 1,050 of these were found through contact tracing measures.

From this number, 984 students tested positive for COVID-19, that is, more than 90% of those detected through contact tracing.
Fearing that the event could result in an even greater spread of the virus, the department is concerned that some students have refused to cooperate with officials.
Department spokesperson Kwara Kekana said: “These students had 340 contacts, of which 32 tested positive. The Gauteng Health Department continues to plead with students and their parents to cooperate with healthcare workers who are tracing contacts, as this is an important process to stop the spread of the coronavirus. ”
