CAPE TOWN – The government unveiled a long list of countries considered high risk in terms of COVID-19 on Wednesday, saying that leisure travelers from these lands would not be able to enter South Africa.

The ministers of the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) briefed the media on the relaxation of international travel restrictions starting Thursday.
However, entry would be allowed for high-level visa holders, investors and diplomats from high-risk countries, as well as South African citizens who wish to return home, but must meet certain conditions.
Interior Minister Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi toured countries considered high-risk due to their rates of infection and death from COVID-19.
The government would review the list biweekly as infection and death rates change and inform the public accordingly.
China was considered to be low risk and anyone traveling to South Africa from an African country can enter.
International Relations Minister Naledi Pandor said that all travelers entering South Africa would need a negative COVID-19 test performed no more than 72 hours before departure and to be screened on arrival.
They should show symptoms, test positive, and be unable to isolate themselves; they would be sent to a facility identified by the state. Pandor said that travelers would need mandatory travel insurance to cover the costs resulting from this.
