A man described by the KwaZulu-Natal police as “the most wanted hitman at the Glebelands shelter” in Umlazi has been arrested.

The arrest is part of an investigation into a “series of murders committed at the Glebelands shelter in recent years,” said police spokesman Colonel Thembeka Mbele.

“In [Friday] Police officers successfully arrested wanted hitman Thobani Kwazikwakhe Mahobo, 35, also known as Laqhasha. He was arrested while hiding in Lamontville.

Mahobo appeared before the Umlazi Magistrates Court on two counts of murder and was in police custody until February 22, 2021 for further investigation, “Mbele said.

Mahobo is charged with the murder of Anele Chutshane and Phumlani Ntozakhe, both 27, on November 15, 2020.

“It is alleged that the deceased … were shot and killed by the suspect as they left his room at Glebelands Hostel. Both were certified dead at the scene. The defendant has a pending assault with intent to cause a serious bodily injury case against him after he assaulted his ex-girlfriend while she was inside her room at the Glebelands shelter in June of last year, “Mbele said.

Both cases have been transferred to the provincial Organized Crime Unit for further investigation. The accused will be profiled to determine if he is linked to other serious crimes.
