JOHANNESBURG – AfriForum prosecutor Gerrie Nel said the failure of police to arrest the main suspect in the murder of soccer star Senzo Meyiwa is damaging the case.
Five men appeared in Boksburg Magistrates Court on Friday in connection with Meyiwa’s murder.
The captain of the Bafana Bafana was shot dead at the home of his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo.
The court set the start of the trial in October with the preliminary hearing in July.
The case will also be sent to the superior court.
Nel said the brain still needs to be arrested.
“I have had briefings with the police and they firmly believe that they have enough evidence to arrest the mastermind.”
There appears to be a conflict of opinion between Nel and the prosecution, who are now treating the incident as a robbery and Nel says that the case should be treated as a premeditated murder.
“A robbery gone wrong excludes the mastermind and a contract murder.”
At the same time, relatives of the accused believed that the whole truth would be brought out during the trial and the mastermind will be unmasked.
