The former Reds defender would like to see the Anfield icon return to Merseyside at some point, but feels like being next in line would be difficult.
Steven Gerrard has been warned that succeeding Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager “would not be good”, and José Enrique urged the Reds legend to bide his time before returning to Anfield.
Klopp’s contract in Merseyside will close in 2024, while Gerrard is also working on terms up to that point at Scottish giants Rangers.
It would be an emotional homecoming, however, following in Klopp’s footsteps promises to be a thankless task for anyone taking up that challenge.
The German strategist has delivered the glory of the Champions League, the Club World Cup and the Premier League during his time at Liverpool, with the promise of more successes to come.
Enrique believes Gerrard would do well to avoid trying to emulate those efforts, saying that patience should be the order of the day for a man who has made no secret of his desire to lead the Reds.
“I don’t know who will replace Klopp, but I hope it is not a decision the club has to make soon,” said former Liverpool defender Enrique. Ladbrokes. “Look at the difference it has made in the team and the players who now want to come and play for us.
“Before he arrived and even when he joined, it was Luis Suárez and Philippe Coutinho, our best players at that time, who wanted to move to better teams, and now we have Thiago who comes from Bayern, who just won the treble, to play for Liverpool because Klopp has made us one of the best clubs in the world.
“I think Stevie will run the club one day, but going after Klopp immediately would not be good. Stevie is probably Liverpool’s best player and he will always be remembered as such, but Klopp fans will want him to win things right away and that’s not easy.
“I really like the way Stevie works as a coach and things are going very well for him at Rangers, but it would be difficult to change the way Liverpool works again after Klopp and achieve immediate success.
“I would love for him to manage Liverpool one day.”
Klopp is expected to leave Anfield once his current contract ends, with a charismatic character who has spent nearly nine years in office when his contract with the Reds ends.
