Rangers boss Steven Gerrard told the Daily Record that Bongani Zungu could be in contention to play Hamilton Academical today.
The Gers are back in league action this afternoon as they host Hamilton at Ibrox just days after their 3-3 draw in the Europa League at Benfica.
The Rangers may make changes to refresh their squad, and new signing Zungu may be looking forward to some first-team action.
The South African international joined Rangers on loan from Amiens last month on the day of the deadline, but has been forced to wait for his debut.
The 28-year-old Zungu missed the game sharp, and the Rangers have now spent a month trying to prepare him for game action.
Now Gerrard says Zungu is “closer” to playing than ever, noting that he is available for this afternoon’s game.
Gerrard added that Zungu’s attitude has been ‘fantastic’ after being given extra work in training, which means he’s very close to the action, even if it’s just from the bench today.
“I am looking to get Bongani involved as soon as possible and he is available for the weekend game. He’s much closer in terms of getting to his level, ”said Gerrard.
“We’ve been trying to speed that up and give him extra work and recharges after training. Your application and attitude has been fantastic. We trained the last days after returning from Portugal and we will make a decision, but it is getting closer, “he added.
