The attorney who represented George Floyd’s family in his death at the hands of a white Minneapolis police officer released a statement Monday after media reported that members of the Los Angeles Police Department had circulated a picture of Floyd. with the phrase: far. “
Floyd, a 46-year-old black man whose arrest on May 25 was captured on video, pleaded for his life and said he couldn’t breathe when Derek Chauvin, a white officer, knelt on his neck. His death sparked protests against police brutality in the United States and abroad and renewed the debate on racism.
The department released a statement over the weekend acknowledging that it was investigating an employee complaint about a picture allegedly written by a department employee, but said it had not found any posts yet.
Floyd’s image with the caption “You take my breath away” in a “Valentine’s Day format” circulated among department members, Chief Michel Moore confirmed to the Los Angeles Times on Saturday.
Moore told the Times that the officer who made the complaint would be interviewed Monday and that the department was working to determine how and where the image may have gotten to the workplace.
On Monday, the Los Angeles Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.
Chauvin’s trial is scheduled to begin March 8, and the other three officers charged in the wake of Floyd’s death will be tried in August, according to court documents.
