JOHANNESBURG – Numsa has said it has no choice but to go ahead with its planned strike action Monday at Gautrain until management returns to the table to renegotiate.
Union-affiliated workers threatened to disconnect tools due to a wage dispute between Gautrain’s operator, Bombela Operating Company.
The commuter rail system, which has been in talks with the union since March, offered workers a 4.1% pay increase, which was apparently rejected.
However, Numsa’s Phakamile Hlubi-Majola said the negotiations stalled because management had issued an ultimatum that they would implement the salary increase for their members even though the parties had not signed an agreement.
“All we want is an opportunity to speak. They refuse to participate. They are imposing and this is something that the law does not allow. You cannot impose changes without significant commitment. “
While Gautrain said it will implement a contingency plan to ensure train services continue, Numsa said some disruptions are expected.
“We are the majority union, the strike will have an impact and will cause a disruption,” said Hlubi-Majola.
