JOHANNESBURG – Gautrain services may be affected on Monday due to a strike threat from the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa).

It is understood that the union and management were unable to find an amicable solution to the wage dispute.

The Bombela Operating Company (BOC), which runs the commuter rail system, has been in talks with Numsa since March.

However, the commitments were temporarily suspended during the total lockdown.

Following the resumption of wage negotiations, Numsa accused the company of shortening the discussions and imposing a non-negotiated 4% increase.

“At the heart of the strike is the fact that the BOC is trying to impose a 4% wage increase without significantly involving us. Like Numsa, we have made an 8% proposal based on last year’s increase to cushion nearby lower values, but this was rejected by management without due consideration. They have a hard line and refuse to involve us at all on this issue, ”said union spokeswoman Phakamile Hlubi-Majola.
