A Gauteng traffic officer was shot when he tried to stop the driver of a vehicle running a red light in Alberton on Friday.
The Gauteng Traffic Police Department expressed outrage and concern over the incident and confirmed that an attempted murder case was under investigation.
The 30-year-old officer of the special patrol unit was shot twice by the motorist, who was driving a red Audi.
“The incident took place at Corner Ring Road and Voortrekker street when the motorist failed to stop for a red robot and the officer instructed him to stop. The motorist decided to disobey a legal instruction by speeding up and shooting the officer in the process, ”said Seal Maremane, spokesman for the Gauteng traffic police.
“The officer is currently stable and receives medical attention at the hospital. The Gauteng traffic police have condemned the incident and ask the officers to be cautious in the performance of their duties, ”he said.
“Motorists are supposed to abide by the law established by the authorities. It is important that the law is respected at all times. It is highly regrettable that as we strive to create safer communities, criminals continue to undermine the rule of law and order. The Gauteng traffic police will not be deterred from enforcing the rules and regulations of the road, ”he said.
He said the department has agreed to bring the perpetrator to the search.
