JOHANNESBURG – Gauteng residents are waking up to a severe thunderstorm with heavy rains that could cause localized flooding.

Thunderstorms are expected to hit most of the province on Thursday due to concerns about high winds in some places.

Mpumalanga, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape can also expect strong thunderstorms Thursday.

Meteorologist Vanisha Phakula said: “We expect localized flooding over Gauteng and the rain will be intermittent for most of the day. So, there is a band that is happening now that will give us a significant amount of rain and then we will see it again in the afternoon ”.

The Johannesburg Highway Agency (JRA) said its teams were monitoring 450 areas in the city.

JRA infrastructure chief Siyabonga Genu said some of the hot spots that could experience localized flooding include Ivory Park, Diepsloot, parts of Soweto and Eldorado Park.

“I think we have a problem with the aging of the infrastructure, it is not adequate to deal with some of the heavy rains. We experienced that last weekend when it rained a lot. We have several low bridges throughout the city. “
