JOHANNESBURG – The South African Meteorological Service issued a severe thunderstorm advisory over parts of Gauteng on Wednesday afternoon.
The storm is expected to hit in the early afternoon and could last until about midnight.
Lightning strikes and localized flooding are also at play, which could cause damage to some informal structures.
Meteorologist Kgolofelo Mahlangu: “It could cause some disruptions in the flow of traffic due to reduced visibility and damaging strong winds. It could be minor damage to informal settlements and places around Gauteng and that will occur between 17:00 and 17:00. 23:00 hours “.
Meanwhile, Robert Mulaudzi of the Joburg Emergency Service said his team was on standby to help where needed.
“Residents are urged to be safe, especially our motorists, who are urged to exercise caution when driving. Also our residents in low-lying areas, mainly our informal settlements to be vigilant and try to avoid crossing flooded bridges or flooded roads “.
