Gauteng Driving License Testing Centers (DLTC) will dedicate 70% of their capacity to driver license renewal starting Monday to address current delays.
“Working in conjunction with all stakeholders, the province will ensure that 70% of all available places for DLTCs are dedicated exclusively to processing driver’s license renewals on a daily basis.
“We have also made the decision that the available capacity at DLTCs, such as equipment, machinery and personnel, will be dedicated to addressing the delay in driver license renewals,” said Gauteng Road Infrastructure and Public Transport MEC, Jacob Mamabolo.
Mamabolo said Wednesday that DLTC managers who undermine this directive will face possible suspension.
A Provincial Management Operations Center will be established to monitor DLTC activities on a daily basis to ensure the decisions made at the meeting are implemented.
“There will also be a dedicated team to maintain and repair the equipment and machinery that is used to process driver license renewals on a regular basis,” Mamabolo said.
Uproot corruption
Starting next month, the department will begin a forensic investigation into allegations of corruption, bribery and collusion reportedly taking place at DLTCs across the province.
“While the current COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact on the backlog of driver license renewals, it has also exposed the fact that over the years DLTCs have not functioned optimally.” Mamabolo said.
He said the capacity of the centers has not been increased to meet demand and pressure from the growing population.
“However, we are confident that with the decisions we have made, we will be able to address the delays.”
The department will pilot the use of mobile units, in partnership with Road Traffic Management Corporation, to increase facility capacity and better serve communities.
“We are aware of the frustration that driver license holders who wish to renew their cards are experiencing. We are taking extraordinary measures to deal with the backlog, ”said Mamabolo.
