It is alleged that the man overheard the dogs outside his property and fired three shots at a female pit bull.
“It was neither reasonable nor necessary to resort to shooting the animal. No attempt was made to separate the animals. There were people around him, he has no right to take justice into his own hands.
“The most inexcusable and aggravating fact in this matter is that he fired a firearm in such a way that it exposed other people to immediate danger,” Bodasing said.
The surviving dog was not injured.
Bodasing emphasized that deadly force was not necessary.
“It was so unnecessary to have to shoot the dog. The other dog was not even injured in the fight, so clearly it was not serious enough to warrant the use of a firearm,” said SPCA cadet Bradley Hughes.
Education
The SPCA removed the dog’s body from a shallow grave.
The man was arrested and charged with cruelty to animals, as well as unlawful firing of a firearm and intentional damage to property.
Randburg SPCA intends to fulfill its mandate to protect animal rights and strive to educate South Africans about abuse.
“There is a big difference between deliberate and conscious cruelty to animals and the result of poverty and lack of education. Add to that the element of available resources.
“When animal abuse is intentional, we can and do not only officially warn, but we file criminal charges,” the charity’s website reads.
National SPCA’s 2019/2020 annual report highlights community outreach as a key pillar in the fight against cruelty to animals and noted a 10-day campaign in which 472 pets were sterilized and vaccinated.
According to the report, 97 cases of animal abuse are awaiting finalization in court.
