Gary Player greets Bezuidenhout at Leopard Creek win: ‘South Africa’s future of golf is bright’

Nine-time Major Champion Gary player has acclaimed his compatriot Christiaan Bezuidenhout after his incredible victory in the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek Country Club on Sunday.

Bezuidenhout signed a final round of 3 under par to finish the tournament 14 under par and seal a four-shot victory at Malelane.

The victory was Bezuidenhout’s second European Tour title after his first win at the Andalucía Masters last year in Spain.

Player congratulated Bezuidenhout for Twitter and proclaimed that the future of South African golf was bright.

Bezuidenhout is also the fourth South African to win on the European Tour this year, the others being Branden Grace (SA Open), George Coetzee (Portugal Masters) and Garrick Higgo (Portuguese Open).

Meanwhile, the victory saw Bezuidenhout jump 20 places, from 61st to the best of his career. 41 in the world golf rankings, making him the second highest ranked SA golfer, behind Louis Oosthuizen (20).

The 26-year-old pocketed a huge € 252 639 (R4.6 million) for his efforts and moved to ninth place in the European Tour’s Race to Dubai rankings.

“This tournament has been close to my heart since I first played it. It has always been a tournament that I wanted to win and achieving it today is really very special to me,” said Bezuidenhout.

Bezuidenhout will play the next shot at this week’s South African Open at the Gary Player Country Club in Sun City.
