Gary Neville has called the Manchester United duo “irreplaceable” as the Red Devils booked their place in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.
Manchester United continued their hot streak with a 2-0 win over Everton that allowed them to qualify for the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, where they will face Manchester City.
However, not everything was easy for Solskjaer’s men. Despite a brilliant start to the game, they failed to score, allowing Everton to return to the game. And Carlo Ancelotti’s were probably the best team in the second half.
Edinson Cavani managed to score late to give the Red Devils the lead with a beautiful shot. And then Anthony Martial put the matter beyond question in injury time. However, two other players managed to get Gary Neville’s attention.
Speaking on Sky Sports Podcast and as reported by Mirror, the Manchester United legend said:
“They are the two players that I think are irreplaceable.
“Fernandes is irreplaceable, they are far away without him. It is a vital piece of the puzzle.
“Maguire, I think, you would know if he was missing. My instinct is that they would miss him greatly.
“I know some people say he’s not the best defender in the league, that he hasn’t done brilliantly since coming in for £ 80 million, but he has a great presence at the heart of the defense.
“He’s good on the ball, he’s composed and he’s good in the air.
“He doesn’t make many mistakes, sometimes they catch him, but he’s a good center-back, a very good center-back and a great presence in that team.
“Him and Fernandes, I’m not sure they can [rest them] right now because Ole doesn’t have the luxury of losing a game, unfortunately. “

Solskjaer had made nine changes to his lineup that night. And the only two who kept their place were Fernandes and Maguire.
We don’t need to tell you why Fernandes is “irreplaceable.” The Portuguese international has been an absolute superstar since moving to Old Trafford in January. And he could very well be the best player in the Premier League right now.
However, Maguire’s choice is a bit more interesting. The English defender has a lot of stick since he moved for £ 80 million from Leicester City. And while he may not yet have proven that he is worth that amount of money, he is a very solid defender.
The fact that he played every minute of football for United in the Premier League this season says a lot about how much Solskjaer trusts the player. And the captain is slowly starting to make up for that with some solid performances.
