Former President FW de Klerk’s son Willem died of cancer at the age of 53, the foundation announced on Wednesday in his father’s name.
“It is with deepest sadness that FW de Klerk announces that his son, Willem, 53, died last night in Durbanville after a valiant battle with cancer,” read the brief announcement from the FW de Klerk Foundation.
“The family will, in due course, make a new announcement regarding the funeral arrangements.”

While De Klerk was in the limelight in the early 1990s during apartheid, his son became famous with a relationship with Erica Adams, who was described as “on the other side of the color line” during the apartheid years. .
