Masandawana is said to have moved quickly to reinforce his team after both of his first-choice centers were injured.

Mamelodi Sundowns has reportedly signed Maritzburg United center back Rushine De Reuck.

The highly rated player was expected to be one of the most sought after players in the latest transfer window with Sundowns and their Gauteng rivals the Orlando Pirates credited with an interest in De Reuck.

De Reuck was always present for Maritzburg at PSL last season, starting all 30 Team of Choice games in the competition and played a pivotal role in helping the team finish in the top eight.

However, the Cape Town-born player stayed on the KwaZulu-Natal side after it was reported that the Chiefs and Pirates had cooled their interest in him prior to the current season.

De Reuck struggled with injuries this season that have seen him make just 10 appearances in all competitions for Maritzburg and he is believed to have now joined the Sundowns during the current midseason transfer window.

What has been said

“Rushine De Reuck has joined the Mamelodi Sundowns from Maritzburg United”, Far pole rreported on Friday.

“The 25-year-old center-back had been on Sundowns’ radar for some time.”

“Interest from Brazilians increased after the untimely death of Motjeka Madisha recently, while they were looking for a replacement.”

Why does it matter and what is the big picture?

  • The Sundowns may have decided to make a move for De Reuck after Brian Mandela Onyango and Ricardo Nascimento were injured earlier this month.
  • Masandawana’s defensive department was further weakened this week due to the suspension of Mothobi Mvala, who played central defense against Black Leopards on Wednesday when he was sent off.
  • Sundowns could sign De Reuck to their Caf Champions League squad as the additional player registration period has started and will end on January 31.
  • Far pole posted the following photo of De Reuck signing his contract with Sundowns on Friday.
