UPDATED: Nissan South Africa has confirmed that the Navara, and not the next generation due out in 2022 as previously reported, will initially be manufactured in Mexico and Thailand before hitting the market next year at the Rosslyn plant outside Pretoria. The final specification will only be announced closer to the local release date.

Nissan, which was leaked last month in a series of spy pictures, has officially unveiled the highly updated D23 Navara in Australia and Thailand which South Africa will receive next year.

Established to provide the foundation for the American market Frontier, the latest and most extensive update to the Navara, now six years old, sees it adopting a front dash design similar to the Titan and Titan XD in the form of a more upright grille and a new bumper. Redesigned bi-LED headlights, a new windshield and more prominent wheel arches. At the rear, the redesigned bumper has an integrated step, while the tailgate is new and the taillights are upgraded to more closely resemble those of the Titan.

Beneath its muscular skin, a new steering rack has been installed, along with a reworked rear suspension borrowed from the discontinued Mercedes-Benz X-Class, contrary to previous reports, and more soundproofing materials have been added. A limited-slip differential is standard on all-wheel drive models and the declared towing capacity remains unchanged at 3,500kg.

In addition to its new look, the Navara joins the Frontier and Titan by receiving the Pro-4X trim grade inspired by the high-spec LE-based off-roader. Indeed, Nissan’s version of the Ford Ranger Wildtrak, Toyota Hilux Legend RS and Volkswagen Amarok Extreme, the Pro-4X benefits from a darkened grille, mirror caps and door handles, 17-inch matt black alloy wheels. wrapped in Yokohama Geolander all- off-road tires, black roof rails and wheel arch liner, red Nissan badges, Pro-4X decals, red accent on the front skid plate and wheel arches, black side steps, a sport bar black and two model-specific colors; Stealth Gray and Milk Gray.

Inside, the updates are comparatively minor and limited to a new D-shaped steering wheel, a seven-inch TFT instrument panel display, an eight-inch infotainment system instead of a seven-inch touchscreen with Apple. CarPlay and Android Auto, new front and rear armrests, a pair of USB Type-C ports and, in the case of the Pro-4X, unique leather trim with red stitching.

More important are driver assistance and safety systems, now comprised of autonomous emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, a revised surround vision camera system, forward collision warning, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning. with Lane Intervention, Hill Start Assist Adaptive Cruise Control, Active Hill Descent Control, Automatic High Beam Assist, and Off-Road Monitor on 4WD models.

Unsurprisingly, there has been no change under the hood, where the 2.3-liter turbodiesel engine produces 120 kW / 403 Nm in the form of a single turbo and 140 kW / 450 Nm with the addition of a second fan. Transmissions are also carried over and include a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic with a choice of rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive.

Final specs and likely pricing will be announced later this afternoon (November 5).
