A mother and her four children were evicted from a City Power substation structure that they had converted into their home in Randburg.

The family believed to be from Zimbabwe had occupied an 11 kV high-voltage transformer substation chamber, turning it into a home with furnishings including a freezer, beds, closet, and stove, among other things.

The mother’s youngest son is about three years old. It was not immediately clear how long they have been living in the substation chamber.

“We have warned about the dangers posed by the occupation of the chambers of the electricity transformation substation in the city of Johannesburg,” MMC told the department of environmental and infrastructure services, Mpho Moerane.

“Although the situation we find today is sad, it is very dangerous and there are even children involved. The biggest concern is the illegality and vandalism that happened to get them there in the first place. So we had to save them by evicting them.

“Already three people have been found electrocuted after being found in the cameras, two of them coming to the Hursthill area, which includes Westbury,” the statement read.

The city said it was speaking with the department of social development and other authorities to help the family with a place to stay and other social needs.
