  • Three people have been arrested for drugs with a street value of 1 million rand was found in a house in Bloemfontein.
  • Police became suspicious when a suspect was taken into custody in a holiday security operation and traces of drugs were found in his car.
  • The suspects are expected to appear in court on Monday.

Free State Police arrested three people and seized drugs worth around 1 million rand during a holiday crime prevention operation in Bloemfontein.

The operation took place during the visit of Police Minister Bheki Cele to the province to monitor holiday season safety and compliance with Covid-19 regulations.

“During these operations, attentive members of the Welkom K9 Unit deployed in Bloemfontein saw a black Audi A3 at the corner of Hanger and St George streets. They stopped the vehicle and asked the owner for permission to search it. Inside the vehicle, they found pieces of [crystal meth] and officers believed that more drugs could be found at the driver’s residence, “said police spokesman Col. Thandi Mbambo.

At the Raymond Mhlaba Street home, the police received permission to search the apartment. They found drugs in several plastic wrappers hidden in a closet.

“CAT weighing 1.9 kilograms, [crystal meth], Thai rock, cocaine and white drugs with an estimated street value of 1 million rand were found and seized. Three suspects, a 40-year-old man and his 27-year-old girlfriend, as well as another 38-year-old man, were arrested and charged with drug trafficking, “Mbambo said.

All three are expected to appear in court on Monday.

Meanwhile, police arrested 329 suspects wanted for various crimes, as well as 21 undocumented people during holiday security operations across the province. Three vehicles were seized, two of which were state vehicles driven without a permit.
