JOHANNESBURG – Four police officers have been arrested in connection with the murder of Mthokozisi Ntumba during student protests last week.
Ntumba was shot and killed in Braamfontein when police fired rubber bullets.
The 35-year-old’s death sparked a public uproar, with calls for the apprehension of those responsible.

Police watchdog Ipid said the officers were from the public order police unit.
Ntumba’s death angered many South Africans, especially students protesting in Braamfontien last Wednesday, when he was shot and killed.
Ipid’s Ndileka Khola said the four policemen were arrested on Monday in connection with the Ntumba shooting.

“Ipid has just arrested four police officers from the public order police unit in connection with the death of Mthokozisi Ntumba.”
Khola said they faced multiple charges.
“They will face murder charges, three counts of attempted murder, as well as thwarting the ends of justice.”
The officers are expected to appear in Johannesburg Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
