Cape Town – The National Maritime Rescue Institute (NSRI) has rescued a four-month-old vulture that was trapped in the Hartbeespoort Dam.

In a statement, the NSRI said Thursday that around 10.45 a.m., NSRI crew members from Hartbeespoort Dam were activated after eyewitnesses reported a vulture that appeared to be trapped in a dense hyacinth in the nearby dam. from the Randburg Bridge.

NSRI Hartbeespoort Dam Station Commander Arthur Crewe said the NSRI Rotary Endeavor rescue vessel was launched and they responded to the scene to investigate.

“Eyewitnesses confirmed that two private boats had previously tried to help the vulture, but appeared to retreat due to the dense hyacinth.

“Upon arriving at the scene, our NSRI rescue craft passed through approximately 900 m of dense hyacinth and reached the vulture, which we found trapped by the foot in the hyacinth. The abandoned fishing line contributed to the entrapment, ”Crewe said.

He said that the vulture tried to run away, but the trap prevented him from going anywhere.

“We were able to free the vulture from the hyacinth and the line and the vulture did not attempt to harm our rescue team while efforts were under way to free the vulture.

“Once released, the vulture tried to fly but, apparently exhausted, the vulture landed in the water and drifted, but was unable to fly,” Crewe said.

He said three rescue swimmers from the NSRI were sent into the water and cornered the vulture to shore. The local vulture conservation organization Vulco was alerted and arrived to help the crew members.

The vulture will be rehabilitated.
