Mmamonnye Ngobeni, the former KwaZulu-Natal chief police officer, was expected to surrender to the police today following corruption allegations against her.

She and another unidentified suspect did not show up at Durban Magistrates Court on Friday as expected and have since pledged to turn themselves in.

Ngobeni is accused of receiving bribes from Thoshan Panday, a controversial Durban businessman who allegedly won a dubious tender to accommodate police officers during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

When Panday appeared in court last week, more details emerged about how he and other police officers in charge of supply chain processes at KZN defrauded the state during the tender award process.

After winning the lucrative R47 million tender, Panday allegedly bribed the police officers who approved the tender and financed the lifestyle of Ngobeni and that of her husband, who is a senior police officer.

At some point, the State alleges that Panday financed a lavish birthday party for Ngobeni’s husband and the party was held at a fancy restaurant in Durban.

His surrender is part of several arrests made by the Hawks last week when the elite investigative unit upped the ante in their fight against rampant corruption.
