Four people between the ages of 32 and 62 were arrested on Wednesday for alleged corruption and extortion in an undercover operation by the Hawks Serious Corruption Investigation Unit and the provincial Anti-Corruption Unit in the Free State.

According to Hawks spokeswoman Lynda Steyn, a Virginia post office manager was allegedly approached and lured in by one of his employees who was working with a group of suspects to provide 250 cards from the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa ) loaded with cash.
For his annoyance, the manager was promised a bribe of R20,000.
The matter passed to the authorities, who detained the four suspects. They were found in possession of the 250 Sassa cards during a sting operation.
The four suspects are a former police officer who is suspended for alleged prior infractions, the post office cleaner and two civilians.
Two vehicles belonging to the suspects have been seized and all four are expected to appear in Welkom Magistrates Court on Friday.
