JOHANNESBURG – Former Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor President Bobani has passed away.

His death comes three weeks after he was admitted to St. George Hospital in Port Elizabeth with complications from COVID-19. His condition deteriorated and he was subsequently connected to a ventilator.

Bobani’s death was confirmed by UDM leader Bantu Holomisa, who tweeted his condolences to family and friends.

Holomisa said that Bobani was “a hardworking cadre who was always available to help the communities.”

Bobani was elected mayor in August 2018, in a shocking vote in which former mayor and DA councilor Athol Trollip lost power after a DA councilor abstained from voting.

But Bobani was removed from office last year via a vote of no confidence.
