JOHANNESBURG – The state capture commission has heard that the government of former President Jacob Zuma believed the judges were in collusion to overthrow the government.
Then, the former Minister of State Security, David Mahlobo, received various payments of up to 21.8 million rand to “take care of the judges”.
A witness, identified as Ms K, said an official who used Frank’s pseudonym told investigators that he turned the money over to Mahlobo’s office.
It is one of many projects that were used to free up millions in cash, and most of it remains missing.
The commission said the official named Frank told investigators that he had instructions to regularly hand over money to Mahlobo.
According to Ms K, Frank said he did not know how the money was used, but knew it was for “Project Justice”.
The commission’s attorney, Paul Pretorious, asked Ms K about the project: “There was a complaint that the judges were conspiring to overthrow the government and these cash deliveries to the minister’s office were to address the issue of judges. Was that information given to you at all? investigation? ”
Mrs. K: “Yes, it was through an interview with Frank.”
Attorney Pretorious asked Ms. K if she understood that the project constituted a fundamental violation of the separation of powers.
“… and an unconstitutional attempt to compromise the independence of the judiciary?”
Ms K: “I totally agree with that statement.”
Mahlobo also allegedly received monthly payments of R2.5 million that were allegedly intended for Zuma.
