Professor Bongani Khumalo, president of former lottery operator Gidani, has passed away at the age of 68.
According to the SABC, of which Khumalo served as a board member for two years, he died as a result of complications from Covid-19 at the age of 68.
In 2016, Khumalo was called as the first witness in a Parliament investigation into various complaints at the public broadcaster.
In a statement on Wednesday, the ANC described Khumalo as one of the most committed public servants in the country.
“After 1994, Dr. Khumalo devoted most of his time and energy to rebuilding and developing the country. He served his country with distinction. The ANC conveys its deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. we want strength and fortitude in your time of pain. “
Khumalo had served on several boards: Chairman of Transnet from 2001 to 2004 and a member of the board of Anglo American Platinum.

The National Lottery Commission (NLC) praised Khumalo for his time as president of the lottery operator. During that time, from 2007 to 2015, the national lottery’s contribution to the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund exceeded 1 billion rand for the first time and ushered in the introduction of the Powerball.
“Professor Khumalo was a pioneering business leader who often emphasized the importance of understanding oneself as African in how one impacts the world in a modern era, even developing an interest in astronomy,” said the NLC.
Details of Khumalo’s funeral have yet to be announced.
