DURBAN – Former KwaZulu-Natal Commissioner Mmamonnye Ngobeni and controversial businessman Thoshan Panday are expected to return to the Durban Commercial Crimes Court on Wednesday morning on multiple charges, including fraud and corruption.

Ngobeni and Panday are charged along with former Police Captain Ashwin Narainpersad and Navin Madhoe.

All four are accused of manipulating bidding processes within the police during the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup.

Panday reportedly received R47 million from the police after it was awarded dubious tenders to provide accommodation and other services in 2010.

He was arrested last month by the NPA’s Investigative Directorate along with Madhoe, a police officer who worked in the police supply chain management department during the alleged fraud.

His co-defendants, Ngobeni and Narianpersad, were later arrested after surrendering to the police.

Ngobeni is alleged to have failed to report an apparent Panday fraud despite being raised with this issue by officials.

Panday faces additional charges of thwarting the ends of justice after it allegedly tried to stop the investigations by bribing officials.
