Former comrade champion Nick Bester, who won the race in 1991, is in the UCI after being attacked while training in the Magaliesberg Mountains near his home in Pretoria yesterday.

In an Instagram post, Bester’s son Shaun-Nick said his father had been hit in the head with a stone, stripped of his clothes and beaten. The former elite triathlete suffered a broken cheekbone, three broken ribs and cuts all over his body.

Images of Bester with his face and leg covered in blood circulated on social media. He was preparing for the Battle of Sports race when he was attacked.

Shaun-Nick said his father was in ICU, where he will have more scans. “They kicked him, beat him, threatened him with a knife and left him with a broken rib, his attackers stole his bicycle. They took off his clothes, tied him up and left him on the mountain. He managed to escape by sliding backwards down the mountain. until he was right up against someone’s fence. “

Adriaan Cronje, administrator of the Nedbank Running Club, where Bester is the athlete manager, said: “He was attacked and is undergoing surgery, but we don’t know more than that at this time.”

Bestere survived a similar attack in 2010 while he was training. And in 2016, she suffered injuries while saving a friend from a possible shark attack in Plettenberg Bay.

Bester began coaching the Comrades in 1985, where he won a silver medal. His third attempt at the ultra marathon saw him win his first gold medal when he finished third. The following year he followed with a fourth position in 1990. In 1991 Bester finally beat the Comrades in a time of 5:40:53.
